An adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel of romance and revenge, starring Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham-Carter, Rupert Graves, Judy Davis and Giovanni Guidelli. While visiting Italy with her companion Caroline, widowed Lilia Herriton is enraptured not only by the countryside but by a younger handsome Tuscan who seduces her. The incident outrages her family and in-law Philip Herriton arrives to end the affair but it is too late as the couple are married. After a tragedy occurs, Philip and his sister embark on another mission; to bring back the couple’s infant son. A tug-of-war ensues between father and family.
