The story centers on a widow (Sophia Loren) who runs a tiny grocery store in Rome. When the store is bombed, she decides to return to her native village with her 13 year old daughter (Eleonora Brown). Back in her village, a timid schoolteacher (Jean-Paul Belmondo) falls in love with her. Her young daughter also secretly falls in love with him and becomes alienated from her mother because of it. While he is on a war mision, he is killed and the mother and daughter become friends once more and agree to carry on. They seek refuge in a church as they make they way back to Rome and encounter an event that will change their lives forever. Version dubbed in English. Adapted from a novel by Alberto Moravia.
