Justine Waddell plays the title role of tragic heroine Tess, sent away to work with distant relatives because of the abject poverty she and her family find themselves in. Tess flees from the estate only to discover she is pregnant; she loses the child and moves away from home once more. This time she starts work as a milkmaid, and love finds her again when she marries Angel Clare. When Angel discovers what happened between his wife and D’Urberville he abandons Tess who is left alone, once more forced to survive in harsh circumstances.
