SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 386-25 computer or better with 4MB of RAM, MPC CD-ROM player, S-VGA graphics card (640x480x256 colours) with compatible monitor, MPC compliant sound card, mouse, Windows 3.1. Using text, sound bytes and images, this CD ROM traces the history of jazz from Louis Armstrong to Duke Ellington. Chapters can be read on screen and cover big band jazz, jazz piano in the 1930s and 1940s, the New Orleans scene and women in jazz. A video gallery includes performances by Louis Armstrong in his first European tour, Duke Ellington and His Band performing “Sophisticated lady”, Count Basie and “I Left my baby” for the CBS TV broadcast of ‘The Sound of Jazz’ and Billie Holiday singing “Fine and mellow” at the same broadcast. There are discussions with jazz critic and historian Dr. Herb Wong as well as with musicians Dave Brubeck, Tee Carson and Shorty Rogers. Also included are the following songs as sound bytes: Jelly Roll Morton, “Black bottom stomp”; Louis Armstrong, “West end blues”; Coleman Hawkins, “Body and soul”; Duke Ellington, “Take the A train”; Johnny Hodges, “Jeep’s blues”; Bennie Goodman and Charlie Christian, “Breakfast feud”; Gene Krupa and Roy Eldridge, “Rockin’ chair”; Count Basie, “One o’clock jump”; Count Basie and Lester Young, “Lester leaps in”; James P. Johnson, “Carolina shout”; Fats Waller, “Aint misbehavin’”; Art Tatum, “Tea for two”; Bessie Smith, “Down hearted blues”; “Billie Holiday, “He’s funny that way”. The disk also contains a bibliography.
