Traces the history of the road link between Melbourne and Sydney, showing the many places of interest along the Hume Highway. Describes the early explorations of Hume and Hovell in 1824; the founding of Melbourne in 1835; travel by coach in the gold rush days; the building of the first railway lines; the introduction of the first internal combustion engines leading to a great increase in mechanical road transportation and the building of the Hume Highway. The latter part of the film shows various places of interest along the Highway between Melbourne and Albury. Commentary by Walter Pym. Photography by J. B. Stirling.
