Shows methods for building various arches including: Ringed arch - wooden centre supported by struts and wedge; use of “dead men” and line and pines for alignment; method of laying half brick rings; wedge shape of mortar joints; the collar joint. Axed arch - setting out for number and shape of cut bricks making templet; traversing; level; use of grub saw to transfer shape of templet to brick; cutting brick to shape; making joggle; formation of skewbacks; pencil guides on wooden centre stepped out by dividers; line to give correct radials; buttering and laying the bricks; grouting the joggles. Gauged arch - use of bricks called cutters or rubbers; method of squaring the face; use of cutting box, struts, saw and file; the reducing box; joggles; special application of mortar for joints; grouting; finishing.
