Set in the 1930s, this film centres on the coming of age of Shuisheng, a country boy brought to Shanghai by his uncle to work for the powerful gang ruled by Tang. He finds himself working for Bijou, Tang’s capricious mistress and nightclub singer. When Shuisheng’s uncle and several other gang members are killed during a rival gang’s unsuccessful attempt on Tang’s life, the latter escapes to a remote island taking both Bijou and Shuisheng with him and thinking of revenge. In Mandarin with English subtitles. Cast includes: Gong Li, Li Baotian, Li Xuejian, Sun Chun and Wang Xiaoxiao.
