The Deer hunter is a stunning epic exploration of the physical and psychological effects of the Vietnam War on three young working class men from a Pennsylvania steel town. The film is influenced by the sumptuous cinema of Visconti and Bertolluci, combining social observation with lavish tableaus of everyday life. From the opening wedding sequence to the nightmarish scenes in a prisoner of war camp, “The Deer Hunter” is a consistently astounding film that refuses to situate itself as either pro or anti War. Rather than tackling the specific history of the Vietnam war, it becomes instead a moving allegory on all war and on the destruction, it reaps on the psyches of both the victor and the conquered. “The Deer Hunter” won an Academy Award for Best Film and remains one of the best films ever made about war. With Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Savage and Meryl Streep. The astonishing cinematography is by Vilmos Zsigmond.
