A respected middle-aged New England widow (Jane Wyman) with two grown children becomes the victim of smalltown gossip when she rejects socially acceptable alternatives for the love of her gardener, a much younger man (Rock Hudson). Sirk uncovers something of the paradox of middle America in the fifties - gleaming surfaces masking a crisis in values - by using the elements of the woman’s melodrama from within to expose the confining complacency and emotional aridity of small town middle-class life. Cast also includes Agnes Moorhood, Virginia Grey, Gloria Talbot and William Reynolds.
