Harrowing screen adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s novel ‘The Executioners’. Robert Mitchum is cast as the sadistic Max Cady, who has recently been released from prison and is determined to seek revenge on the lawyer who testified against him in a rape trial. Gregory Peck plays the targeted Savannah lawyer, Sam Bowden whose actions gradually spiral towards violence once Cady begins to harass his wife (Polly Bergen) and teenage daughter (Lori Martin). Unable to restrain Cady using legal methods, Bowden lures him to a remote location where he is free to confront him on equal terms. Cast includes: Martin Balsam, Jack Kruschen, Telly Savalas and Barrie Chase. Cinematography by Samuel Leavitt. Music by Bernard Herrmann. Screenplay by James R. Webb.
