A classic collection of five British children’s television programs from the series “Watch with mother” screened to the first children of the television age during the 50s and 60s. Monday - “Picture book: Bush-baby” (transmitted 19 August 1963): Hosted and narrated by Vera McKechnie, along with ‘Sausage’ the dog, (a string puppet) includes a nature segment, animated storytelling and creative activities with a sandbox. Tuesday - “Andy Pandy: The Cart” (transmitted 8 July 1952): Stars string puppet Andy Pandy and his friends and features some real live fluffy ducklings in this short story. Wednesday - “Flower Pot Men: The Potato man” (transmitted 4 October 1953): A combined animated/live action story starring those two very famous puppets who live in flower pots, Bill and Ben. Thursday - “Rag, Tag and Bobtail: Snowballs” (transmitted 25 November 1954): Features hand puppets, Rag the hedgehog, Tag the little mouse and Bobtail the rabbit as they discover the delights of the snowball flower. Friday - “The Woodentops: Horseshoe” (transmitted 14 March 1958): Features the wooden string puppets of the ‘Woodentop’ family - mum, dad, baby, Willie and Jenny the twins, Mrs Scrubit who comes to help the Woodentops, Sam who helps dad, Spotty the dog and Dobbin the horse. These five 15 minute puppet shows are all filmed in b&w and are suitable for pre-schoolers and lower primary school level.
