Episode of Series “Films of the great victory 1941-1945”.
Expressionistic melodrama set in WW2, about a young Russian woman, who believes her lover to have perished in battle. Devastated by grief she falls into a passionless affair with his cousin, who seduces her during an air-raid. Struggling to find meaning amid the tragedies that have befallen her and the calamity of war, she vacillates between despair and hope. Winner of the Palm d’or at Cannes. Stars Tatyana Samoylova in the title role.
