Wartime musical comedy about a hypochondriac elevator operator who, after being drafted into the Army, becomes a surprise hero. Infatuated with nurse Mary, Danny Weems (Danny Kaye) tries to set up his friend Joe with her friend and fellow nurse Virginia, (Dinah Shore) but Virginia is crazy about Danny and Joe and Mary fall for each other. After all four enter the Army, Danny, Joe, and Virginia discover they are being transported to the South Pacific aboard the same ship. Danny accidentally causes Mary to be smuggled aboard their ship, and spends much of the film trying to keep her hidden from the colonel. When the troops finally land, Danny is thrown in the brig, where Japanese soldiers first kidnap him and then are tricked into capture by Danny. He returns to Virginia and acclaim as a hero. Cast also includes Dana Andrews, Constance Dowling. the Goldwyn Girls.
