Glyndebourne Festival Opera 1979 production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with words by J.N. Bouilly, J.F. Sonnleithner and F. Treitschke, produced by Peter Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink and the Glyndebourne Chorus. Set in a Spanish prison, the opera tells of a wife, Leonore (Elisabeth Soderstrom), who, disguised as a man (Fidelio), enters the prison to free her husband, the prisoner, Florestan (Anton de Ridder). Cast also includes Ian Caley (Jaquino), Elizabeth Gale (Marzelline), Curt Appelgren (Rocco), Robert Allman (Don Pizarro) and Michael Langdon (Don Fernando). Sung in German with English subtitles.
