This wonderful and lavish production of Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi was recorded live at the Metropolitan Opera on 26 March 1983 and performed by an extraordinary cast including Placido Domingo in the role of Don Carlo, with Mirella Freni (Elizabeth of Valois), Grace Bumbry (The Princess Eboli), Louis Quilico (Rodrigo), Nicolai Ghiaurov (King Philip) and Ferruccio Furlanetto (The Grand Inquisitor). Production by John Dexter and featuring the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra conducted by James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Chorus lead by chorus master David Stivender. Also included on this tape is a special short program “Verdi at San’t Agata” about Verdi’s beautiful villa which is now preserved just as he left it. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
