Poverty is rife in the world of Mirrah Foulkes’ Judy & Punch (2019). While Judy and Punch make a living performing marionette shows and have both everyday clothes and puppeteering outfits, most characters in the film, set in the 16th century, can only afford one set of threads. Judy’s everyday outfit is a tapestry of petticoat, skirt, apron, blouse and bodice. This layered approach that costume designer Edie Kurzer took allows different parts of the costume to be added or removed to create different looks, while reflecting the character’s downtrodden background.
