In our free webinar series, media literacy and learning experts Michael Dezuanni and Amanda Levido will be our guides through the complex, challenging and ever-changing landscape of media and digital culture. They will look at curriculum connections, model best-practice teaching and share helpful resources.

Session 1 - Digital literacy and critical thinking in English

How can we use language and literacy sessions to foster students’ critical thinking about digital media? Join Michael Dezuanni and Amanda Levido to learn about media literacy teaching strategies for making and responding to digital texts.

Session 2 -Early years media literacy (Wed 18 Jun, 3.45pm – 4.30pm)

Why should children in the early years begin to develop their media literacy skills and knowledge? In this session, PhD researcher Tammy White joins Michael Dezuanni and Amanda Levido to discuss her media literacy work with kindergarten and pre-year educators and students.

Session 3 -Media literacy Years 4–8 (Wed 6 Aug, 3.45pm – 4.30pm)

Media literacy is a powerful way to assist students in the middle years of schooling to develop knowledge and skills to navigate the complex digital media environment. Join Michael Dezuanni and Amanda Levido to learn about media literacy teaching strategies.

Session 4 - Media literacy in the age of AI  (Wed 20 Aug, 3.45pm – 4.30pm)

Generative AI has created new ways to use, make and circulate digital media, but how can we get students to apply critical thinking to these processes? In this session, Michael Dezuanni and Amanda Levido will unpack how to use the media literacy key concepts framework to respond to Generative AI.

About the presenters

Dr Amanda Levido is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University, Australia. She currently researches media literacy education in school and out-of-school contexts and considers how rapidly emerging technologies impact on media literacy education, particularly for young children. She is a qualified secondary school media teacher and has experience working with primary school teachers to include Media Arts and digital technologies in their classrooms. Amanda is an Affiliated Investigator with the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child.

Michael Dezuanni is Professor in the School of Communication at Queensland University of Technology.  He undertakes research about digital media, literacies and learning in home, school and community contexts. He is a chief investigator in the national ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child. Michael has been involved with media literacy education for over 30 years as a secondary media teacher and as a teacher educator and researcher.  He was expert advisor to ACARA for the develop of Media Arts for the Australian Curriculum.
