School visits - Feng Mengbo: Long March Restart
School exhibition visit
When
Wed 19 Aug – Fri 18 Dec 2026
10am – 2.30pm
Feng Mengbo playfully reimagines modern Chinese history as a fantastical interactive adventure.
Inspired by the Long March – the Chinese Red Army’s 1934–36 military retreat – this playable artwork transforms a defining chapter of history into an immersive side-scrolling videogame. Guide a Red Army soldier across two giant screens in a world inspired by classic videogames like Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter II.
Armed with Coca-Cola cans, the soldier battles supernatural enemies and pop-culture figures across 14 levels drawn from historical landmarks, retro videogames and Cold War science fiction.
Play along, or watch as the soldier advances, inviting you to join the surreal, pixelated march through time and space.
Bookings
This is a free exhibit / artwork, but school group bookings are essential. Entry is on the half hour, for a maximum of 25 students.
The work is interactive, but can only be controlled by one person at a time, so please consider booking smaller groups so all students get an opportunity to interact.
Don't forget you can combine your visit with a visit to our free centrepiece exhibition The Story of the Moving Image.
