The costume that broke TV.

Performing on Saturday Night Live in 1979 with Vaudeville performer Klaus Nomi, Bowie created a storm with his inventive costumes, wild puppetry and unusual stage props, including a pink plastic poodle. Inspired by Dadaism and his time in Berlin, the huge PVC tuxedo he wore during the song The Man who Sold the World, was so tight and rigid the Starman had to be carried on and off the SNL stage by his backing singers. Curator Emma McRae explains the inspiration for the iconic suit and how it paved the way for the 1980s new wave.
