Sandy Powell on costume design

Craft

It’s all about the cloth

For multi Academy Award winning costume designer Sandy Powell, costume is all about authenticity and that begins with choosing the right fabric.

"I really always start with the cloth. The fabric will give me an idea what to make with it – if I find a fabric I fall in love with, I’ll make a costume around that" says the Oscar winner. In fact in the field of Costume Design, she has won three Oscars and been nominated twelve times. Sandy has deep collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes working across many of their films and has been Scorsese’s costume designer of choice since Gangs of New York in 2002.

Hear how Sandy got her big break in costume design, the influence of David Bowie, and how she jumps from contemporary to period films in creating costumes for Wolf of Wall Street to Cinderella and Carol. In conversation with Jessica Bugg from RMIT School of Fashion and Textiles, Sandy delves into fascinating detail about her working process and shares some of her trade secrets in creating some of her most memorable costumes.
