Director Margreth Olin's lyrical and visionary ode to her homeland juxtaposes the overwhelming scale of the Norwegian landscape with her family's quiet connection to the land.

Songs of Earth weaves the smallness of human lifespan into the grandness of the earth’s history, and does it all with unspeakable beauty.

Alissa Wilkinson (Vox)

The mountainous landscapes of Norway provide the monumental backdrop for Margreth Olin's mighty cinematic nature experience; a magnificent, existential journey with the filmmaker’s parents as its human yardstick, and with the primordial forces of the earth looming in the bedrock.

Curator's Note

Beautifully shot by cinematographer Lars Erlend Tubaas Øymo, Songs of Earth offers a unique view of the overwhelmingly beautiful Norwegian landscape across four seasons of a year. Shepherding us through the vistas are the director's parents who quietly recount family stories respectfully asserting their place within this secret corner of the world, in between the haunting creaks of the nearby glaciers on the move.

Wim Wenders and Liv Ullman are Executive Producers on Songs of Earth which made its world premiere at CPH:DOX and has recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
