Cate Blanchett and Aswan Reid light up the screen in Warwick Thornton's luminous new feature.
After trying to fight off the police, a young aboriginal boy is captured, subdued and delivered to a Catholic orphanage in a remote corner of South Australia. Sister Mum (Deborah Mailman) and George (Wayne Blair) work at the orphanage alongside Sister Eileen (Cate Blanchett) a nun who takes an interest in the mysterious new arrival, while harbouring secrets of her own.
Curator's Note
In his follow-up to feature films Sweet Country and We Don't Need a Map (both released in 2017), director Warwick Thornton delivers a period drama that entwines colonialism and religious imperialism with magic realism. Referencing and reclaiming western cinema's tendency to mysticise First Nations people and culture, The New Boy leans in to magic realist elements allowing them to cast their beguiling spell over audiences.
The New Boy premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival where it competed in the Un Certain Regard section. It has since been nominated for twelve AACTA awards across almost all eligible categories.
