When
Australian director David Michôd's tells the shocking, real-life story of boxer Christy Salters, a pioneer trading blows within a male-dominated industry set on smothering her queerness and autonomy.
Raised in Mullens, West Virginia, Christy Salters is known for defining women’s boxing as more than a minor league offshoot.
Known as “the Coal Miner’s Daughter”, Christy (Sydney Sweeney) proves herself to be a prodigy in the sport clocking up an 83% win record, with bravado to burn. But her biggest fights happen outside the ring.
Keeping up appearances for her homophobic mother (Merritt Wever), Christy is coerced by her trainer Jim Martin (Ben Foster) into marrying him. Soon, his insecurity, arrogance and controlling behaviour overshadow his mentorship, and as her career begins to soar, her life becomes a bout for survival.
Christy premiered at the 50th annual Toronto International Film Festival where it screened as a special presentation. The film was release theatrically in Australia in January.
