When Mona Friedman (Julianne Moore) is cast in a bit part at a small community theatre, she transforms from a shy, unassuming housewife into a zealous method actor. She's willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role – even if it means waging war against the show’s domineering director.
The great irony of Jesse Eisenberg's The Debut, his third feature film as director following the acclaimed A Real Pain, is the casting of Julianne Moore. One of the best actors of her generation, she has one Oscar to her name (Still Alice), and nominations stretching back to 1997's Boogie Nights. Moore heads into the awards season as the favourite to win a Best Actor Oscar for her performance as a bad actor, giving it all she can.
The Debut premiered at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival.
