When
Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder turn their cameras on Elizabeth Holmes in a documentary far stranger than it first appears.
Thirty-four days before Elizabeth Holmes begins her prison sentence for fraud, the Theranos founder and her partner, Billy Evans, invite filmmakers Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder into their home.
What begins as an intimate portrait of Holmes in her final weeks of freedom becomes something much stranger, as it grows harder to tell who is performing and who is watching.
Curator Note
Known for his deadpan humour and fascination with the blurred line between performance and reality, Fielder (Nathan for You, The Rehearsal) brings an unsettling tension to his interactions with Holmes and Evans. Meanwhile, Oppenheim (Primetime, Some Kind of Heaven) takes an observational approach that lets seemingly mundane domestic moments carry unexpected weight.
Shot over three years, the film turns into a wildly unpredictable study of deception, intimacy and the limits of the documentary form. As the filmmakers try to make sense of their subjects, you’ll start to wonder whether anyone’s truth can ever be fully captured on camera.
