Viola Davis channels her inner warrior for this empowering and action-packed historical epic.
Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca, leader of Agojie, the all-female warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. While Nanisca trains the next generation of recruits and prepares them to fight against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life, she is also forced into battle with her own, inner demons.
Curator’s note
Viola Davis’ visceral, BAFTA-nominated portrayal of the warrior Nanisca, matches her fierce determination to get The Woman King made. Davis has spoken out about both the performing challenge of training for the film’s impressive fight sequences while dealing with menopause, and the producing challenge of breaking down perceptions that a film about black, female fighters in Africa could not be commercially viable. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s blistering action epic is testament to Davis’ grit and to the star power of an actress whose 2023 Grammy win (for the audiobook recording of her memoir, Finding Me) saw her become the 18th member of the EGOT ‘club’ (performers who are Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners).
