Part one of James Benning's California Trilogy, El Valley Centro is "a landmark in turn of the century American cinema" (Time Out).
Each film of the California Trilogy – El Valley Centro (1999), Los (2000), and Sogobi (2001) – contains 35 shots, each exactly two and a half minutes long, to "map the state, visualising its beauty while examining the politics of water and of ethnicity" (Artforum).
