Tjintu Pakani: Sunrise Awakening
Join us for a rarely screened documentary about the landmark First Nations performance workshop held at the Black Theatre Arts and Culture Centre in 1975.
29 students from across Australia travel to Redfern to take part in a performing arts program for First Nations peoples, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to nurture the creative interests of emerging artists.
While working as a teacher at the centre, director Andreea Kindryd tracks the students through an intensive six weeks of drama and writing exercises, culminating in a series of plays and dances. The striking stage performances, crafted alongside Bangarra Dance Theatre co-founder Carole Johnson, capture the students invigorated political and cultural awareness born of artistic collaboration.
Stay after the screening for a yarn led by Queer Wiradjuri Director and Cinematographer Merryn Trescott.
