A tapestry of seemingly disparate human moments builds a narrative web around an impending violent attack.
On December 23 1993, a 19-year-old student killed three people in a Viennese bank before turning the gun onto himself. Swirling around the incident are seventy-one fragments in the lives of seemingly unrelated people.
A Romanian boy enters Vienna illegally. A married couple try to adopt a young girl. And a retired old man tries to connect with his daughter.
Curator’s Note
After two films interrogating human behaviour in a linear structure, Michael Haneke completes his trilogy (beginning with The Seventh Continent and Benny's Video) with a film that pulls the narrative apart and puts it back together again.
The seventy-one fragments of the title are scenes from the lives of a group of disparate people in the lead-up to a violent incident alongside fragments of actual news broadcasts.
71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance premiered at the 47th Cannes Film Festival in the Director’s Fortnight section marking the third film in Michael Haneke’s trilogy to have been selected for the sidebar program.
