An omen has been fulfilled. When his film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, director Cristian Mungiu remarked that he hoped the prize would be a good omen for "small directors" in "small countries" working with modest budgets outside the star system. Nineteen years later, Cristian Mungiu is no small director. His films have amassed nine prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, including one for Best Director (Graduation), two for Best Actress (Beyond the Hills) and most recently he has won his second Palme d’Or for his new film Fjord. Today he is one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation.

The omen was also good for Romania. The 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' win brought the Romanian New Wave into the public consciousness, although in truth, it’s now considered to have started three years earlier. Since then, Romanian cinema has become a staple of film festivals around the world, and the movement shows no sign of ending.
