Sent to study at a remote mountain temple, a young man falls for an older woman fleeing her marriage in Yu-Suan Huang's bold Taiwan New Wave drama.
Wen-Hsiang's wealthy grandmother sends him to a remote monastery run by Buddhist nuns, hoping the isolation will help him focus on his college entrance exam. Wen-Hsiang instead finds himself drawn to Su Bi, a married woman taking refuge there after her marriage fell apart. Soon their attraction turns into full-blown passion. Neither of them is prepared for what follows.
Curator’s note
Autumn Tempest is one of the rare Taiwan New Wave films directed by a woman. Yu-Suan Huang brings a clear feminist vision to a story that could easily have slipped into overheated melodrama. Instead, the film tackles taboo themes like adultery, abortion and sexual liberation, rarely addressed on screen at the time.
A big box-office hit at the time, Autumn Tempest is a fearless exploration of female desire and an important moment in the Taiwan New Wave.
A pioneer of Taiwanese feminist cinema
