Two old friends reunite in Taipei in Edward Yang's quietly radical debut about memory, choice and womanhood in 1980s Taiwan.
After more than a decade apart, two women reunite in Taipei. Concert pianist Qingqing (Terry Hu) reconnects with her old friend Lin Jia-li (Sylvia Chang), and their conversation soon drifts into the past.
Memory by memory, the pair retrace the choices, relationships and social pressures that shaped their different lives.
Curator's note
Edward Yang's first feature announced a new direction for Taiwanese cinema. Released in 1983, That Day, on the Beach became a defining work of the Taiwan New Wave.
The film features an extraordinary performance from Sylvia Chang and marks the feature debut of legendary Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle.
