Isao Takahata's first feature for Studio Ghibli as Director remains to this day one of the most emotionally impactful films of all time.
An emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation.
In the aftermath of a World War II bombing, two children flee their home in Kobe and embark on a journey to find their relatives. Eventually deciding to run away and live alone in the Japanese countryside without grown-ups, the two children face the devastating effects of war, in Isao Takahata's overwhelmingly beautiful film.
Curator's Note
Melancholic, beautiful, and unchallenged as the most emotionally potent film in the Studio Ghibli catalogue, Isao Takahata's first feature for the studio is simply unforgettable. Much darker in tone than My Neighbor Totoro, and less suitable for younger viewers, the film delivers a powerful message about the effects of war on the innocent in a way that focuses less on spectacle and more on the compassion of viewers young and old.
There will be tears! But, remember, that's ok.
Grave of the Fireflies contains some mature themes and we ask parents to use their discretion if bringing younger viewers to attend this screening. The film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles.
