Richard E. Grant stars as a literary great you wouldn't trust as far as you could read him in Alice Troughton's twisted melodrama.
Four years after graduating at the top of his class in Literature at Oxford, Liam (Daryl McCormack) is still an unpublished author. When J.M. Sinclair, Britain’s foremost man of letters, offers him a live-in position for four weeks to help his son get into Oxford, Liam sees his opportunity to get near his idol and maybe draw inspiration for his first book. Soon, though, Liam discovers the family harbours quiet tensions, painful memories and dark secrets.
Curator's Note
It's tough out there for the privileged. The past year has gifted us two films about upper-class homes being infiltrated by the upwardly mobile. Saltburn was one, and now we have The Lesson with a family unit led by a deliciously prickly Richard E. Grant and Julie Delpy (Three Colours: White). Daryl McCormack who returns to our screens after Good Luck to You, Leo Grande rounds out the cast as a burgeoning writer who is either teaching lessons or about to be schooled.
The Lesson premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2023.
