A string of seemingly unrelated and shocking murders, each committed by a different person, all bear the same mark, an X slashed across the victim's throat. Detective Takabe (Koji Yakusho) begins to investigate these random crimes and discovers that what connects them all is an enigmatic and dangerous amnesiac (Masato Hagiwara). Soon, the detective finds himself in a deadly and disturbing cat-and-mouse game with the evil serial killer, whose mind games begin to distort the detective's grip on reality.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s remarkable international breakthrough heralded a new voice in the emerging Japanese new wave of horror. The film's influences can be seen in later J-horror films, particularly in its link between technology and the supernatural, here represented by a mysterious silent film that seemingly predicts the killings. Brimming with existential dread and menace, Cure is a hallucinogenic trip into the darkest recesses of the human psyche.
