When
Yeon Sang-ho’s gripping animated prequel to Train to Busan follows a zombie outbreak through Seoul, where class division proves as dangerous as the undead.
A disoriented homeless man stumbles into Seoul Station with a bite wound on his neck. Across town, Hye-sun is on the run again. She escaped a life in a brothel, but now her boyfriend, Ki-woong, is trying to sell her for sex.
Her father is searching for her too, and tracks down Ki-woong through the ad he placed. As a zombie outbreak sweeps through Seoul, the two men form an uneasy alliance and race to reach Hye-sun before the undead do.
Curator’s note
From George A. Romero satirising mindless consumerism in Dawn of the Dead to the Brexit allegory of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, zombie films have long held a mirror up to society.
Yeon Sang-ho’s Seoul Station, the animated prequel to Train to Busan, keeps that tradition alive (or undead). Class division and social inequality drive this grim survival thriller, and the city’s divides prove just as dangerous as the infected. And as in the best zombie films, the line between human and monster is frighteningly thin.
A simple, thrilling ride through a fiend-infested world.
