When
A woman’s idyllic middle-class life begins to unravel when her husband brings home a young maid and her malevolent wooden doll, in Ko Young-nam’s cult South Korean horror.
Seon-hee’s tranquil middle-class life begins to fray when her husband, who regularly travels for business, brings home Miok, a beautiful younger woman, to work as their live-in maid.
At first relieved to have help around the house, Seon-hee soon begins to have disturbing visions and persistent nightmares. As her paranoia mounts, she comes to suspect Miok is having an affair with her husband. Then there’s the uncanny wooden doll Miok carries everywhere she goes.
Curator's note
With shades of 70s and 80s Italian giallo, Ko Young-nam’s Suddenly in the Dark is a wild kaleidoscope of vibrant colour, eye-popping production design and surreal imagery, all set to a pulsing synth score. It was made as South Korea was loosening its censorship laws around sex and violence, and it shows.
Little seen outside its home country, the film is a missing piece of South Korean horror history and a cult classic ripe for rediscovery.
Suddenly in the Dark is one of the very best pre-millennial K-Horrors: genuinely frightening and utterly bizarre.
