When
When a Japanese stranger arrives in a rural Korean village, a mysterious sickness and a spate of brutal murders follow in Na Hong-jin’s epic horror.
In the sleepy village of Gokseong, police officer Jong-goo investigates a string of brutal murders in which family members turn on one another. As a strange sickness spreads, rumours swirl that a menacing Japanese vagrant is to blame.
The stakes turn personal when Jong-goo’s daughter falls ill. Desperate, he enlists a shaman to rid the village of the evil closing in around them.
Curator’s note
Na Hong-jin’s third feature (after 2008’s The Chaser and 2010’s The Yellow Sea) is an epic horror that taps into the anxieties of a rapidly developing nation that can’t quite bury its superstitions and prejudices.
As Jong-goo turns to the old ways to save his daughter, The Wailing thrillingly lays bare the fears of a generation caught between deep-rooted tradition and an uncertain future.
This is horror filmmaking that's designed to work on you like a virus, slowly incapacitating your defenses so it can build up and do some real damage.
