When
A devout priest wrestles with a new thirst for blood and a forbidden love in Park Chan-wook’s sensual, Cannes Jury Prize-winning vampire thriller.
Devoted Catholic priest Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) volunteers for a risky vaccine trial in the hope of curing a deadly virus. The experiment fails, but he makes a miraculous recovery after a blood transfusion. However, the lifesaving treatment has left him with symptoms of vampirism, including a thirst for blood, superhuman strength and an aversion to sunlight.
Already wrestling with these new urges, he falls for Tae-ju, the wife of a childhood friend. As their affair deepens, so does the craving. And when Tae-ju becomes a vampire too, her bloodlust proves even wilder than his.
Curator’s Note
Park Chan-wook followed up his vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance) with this wicked take on the vampire mythos, loosely based on Émile Zola’s 1867 novel Thérèse Raquin.
Rarely seen in Korean mythology, the vampire becomes Park’s vehicle for exploring religious guilt, repression and class exploitation.
Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Thirst is seductive, strange and gloriously unhinged.
This fervid extravaganza is easily Park's best film since Oldboy.
