Co-written by Jean Epstein’s sister, Marie, this was the third large-scale production that the director made for Films Albatros, a production company formed by Russian practitioners fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution.

Shot partly on location in Cannes and featuring atmospheric Art Deco sets designed by key collaborator Pierre Kefer, it follows the tragic fate of a father and son addicted to the high life of gambling. With echoes of Jacques Demy’s Bay of Angels, this melodrama following the destructive nature of money is Epstein’s best mainstream narrative.
