Paulina is the only daughter of an upper class family in 19th century Italy. She grows up under the preying eyes of her large and domineering family and can only dream about love. Between her dreams and her religious devotion, she finds time to fall in love with a married nobleman. Sensing the untenability of the situation, Paulina considers entering a convent, but not before she has a last encounter with her lover.
