The writer Marat has exiled himself with his family to a small Portugese village, Tavira. He is cared for by his wife, Genevieve. The family doctor informs Genevieve that Marat is dying of cancer. She tries to hide the news from her husband who manages to find out about his illness anyway. Meanwhile, a television programme extends an invitation to Marat to film a portrait.
