In the beginning of Wergaia & Wemba Wemba singer-songwriter Alice Skye’s “Stay in Bed”, the late, great Uncle Jack Charles welcomes the viewer to ‘Mob’s Got Talent’. The intro from the Boon Wurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung elder subverts the format of shows like Australia’s Got Talent, reclaiming an entertainment format that has colonial roots in Britain Has Talent, to celebrate First Peoples excellence, including performers Maya Hodge, Cerulean, Troi-Saraih, Sam King, Kane King and Kaydee. Through the video and lyrics, Skye, who suffers from chronic illness, portrays society’s pressure to push yourself beyond your limits and the extractive nature of the music industry. Cinematography by Nick Mckk.
