In Memoir of a Snail (2024), Melbourne twins Grace and Gilbert are separated and sent to live in Canberra and Perth after their paraplegic, alcoholic father dies. This set of gritty Brunswick Street is a combination of familiar Melbourne shop fronts, which were rearranged and reused in various scenes to represent the city. Each city in the film is defined by its colour palette: Melbourne is shaded black and grey, Canberra is beige and cream while the farm in Perth is a strict, dark brown. As a Melburnian, it was important to filmmaker Adam Elliot that the film reflected his experience of his city, from the cast of locals like Eric Bana and Sarah Snook to the sets and characters.
Memoir of a Snail opens in cinemas October 17, 2024.
