Meryl Streep hosts this film discussing with experts in the field of managing pain. Joan Robinson suffers from cancer. She has lived with unremitting chronic pain for months and years along with her husband Eric which clouded their work and personal lives. Joan and her doctors explored many kinds of medication with mixed results - sometimes they would work, others not so.
