The first of the “At the flicks” series, this video recaptures what it was like to go to the movies in Australia in the 1930s after the introduction of sound. It presents an evening’s viewing complete with interval and the National Anthem. Rediscover what going to the flicks used to be like, featuring “Clara Gibbings” (directed by Frank Thring Snr, 1934) and a Cinesound newsreel, the short film “Tap dancers” (starring Stan George and Ray Moon Jnr) and the Bela Lugosi short The Phantom Creeps.
