Cristian Mungiu’s nightmarish vision of a small-town doctor's gradual moral corruption as he attempts to sway his daughter's exam results.
Romeo, a well-respected doctor in a small Romanian town, is distressed to learn his teenage daughter has been assaulted on the eve of an important exam that will guarantee her a scholarship overseas.
The likelihood that she might be unable to take the exam triggers a series of events that find Romeo going to dubious lengths to secure his daughter’s future. As he falls deeper into a tangle of underhanded bribes and favours, he begins to question his own moral compass and the future his generation has left for their children.
Curator’s note
Cristian Mungiu announced himself as a major European auteur with his 2007 Palme d’Or-winning 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a harrowing account of women seeking personal freedom during Nicolae Ceaușescu’s repressive reign. Graduation takes place in the years after that regime, but Mungiu paints a damning picture where the moral rot and corruption remain and has now filtered down to everyday family life.
Graduation went on to secure Mungiu a Best Director award at Cannes, further cementing his reputation as a key figure of the Romanian New Wave.
Superbly acted, and photographed and edited with forensic precision, this is Romanian cinema at its best.
