Die My Love

A young mother in rural Montana slowly slips into madness as she grapples with postpartum depression.

Jackson (Robert Pattinson) and his pregnant girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) move from New York into his recently deceased uncle’s farmhouse in Montana. Initially happy in their idyllic abode, the couple soon begin to bicker. Grace finds herself increasingly isolated as Jackson is frequently away for work. Bored, heavily pregnant and lonely, Grace’s tenuous grip on her sanity begins to slip and her behaviour becomes more erratic and extreme.

Curator’s note
Based on Argentine author Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel, Die My Love proved to be a perfect vehicle for Lynne Ramsay whose fragmented, elliptical approach to film language is adept at portraying a mind that is fracturing under pressure. Initially the project was brought to her via Lawrence, but Ramsay turned it down, thinking she had explored similar terrain in We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). Once on board however, Ramsay shifted the focus from the postpartum depression themes and leaned more into the feral love story at its heart.

In scene partners Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence, Ramsay found two fearless actors willing to go the extra mile in this dark, blackly funny exploration of love and madness.
