Albert Quentin, who used to be a colonial soldier in China, is now living a peaceful life as an inn keeper in Normandy with Suzanne, his wife. One of Albert’s pleasure in life is to drink until he is transported back to his memeories of China. After surviving miraculously the bombings and the Allied landing in Normandy, Albert swears never to drink again and settles into a life of domestic routine and quiet boredom. Fifteen years later, a client arrive at the inn. His name is Gabriel Fouquet and he drinks to forget a failed marriage.
