In rural France, ‘Poil de Carotte’, an undernourished and unloved young boy, is badly treated by is ageing mother but his often absent father is unaware of all this. Everything comes to a head when the boy attempts suicide. The film opens a stunning establishing shot, nearly two minutes long and containing eleven distinct movements. ‘Poil de Carotte’ was filmed by Julien Duvivier in 1926 (silent). It was re-made by Paul Mesnier (1952) and Henri Graziani (1973).
